Children’s Defense Fund-Texas to Honor State Changemakers at Annual ‘Celebration of Joy’ Gala in Austin

AUSTIN, TX — In a statewide effort to spotlight resilience, community building, and the fundamental right of every child to thrive, the Children’s Defense Fund-Texas (CDF-TX) is preparing to host its signature annual event, “A Celebration of Joy.” Scheduled for Thursday, October 8, 2026, the gathering will bring together community leaders, advocates, families, and young creatives to honor prominent Texans who have dedicated their lives and careers to advancing the well-being, health, and futures of the Lone Star State’s youngest residents.

The prominent child advocacy organization, operating as the local arm of the renowned national nonprofit, announced that this year’s gala will take place at the picturesque Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, located at 4801 La Crosse Avenue in Austin. Running from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., the evening is designed not only to celebrate adult champions of public service and policy but also to center the voices, perspectives, and artistic expressions of local youth.

This year’s overarching theme, “Through Their Eyes,” promises to transform the venue into an immersive showcase of youthful imagination. Event organizers explain that the program will feature artwork created by children and teenagers from across the Greater Austin area. These creative pieces reflect the hopes, personal truths, and unbridled imaginations of the next generation, offering attendees a vivid window into how young people perceive their communities. By placing these young artists at the heart of the gala, CDF-TX aims to remind the public and policymakers alike of what genuine joy, community justice, and a deep sense of belonging look like when children are prioritized in local neighborhoods, schools, and civic spaces.

At the center of the evening’s festivities will be the formal presentation of CDF-TX’s prestigious awards, recognizing individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment to the organization’s mission. Among the highest honors bestowed by the chapter are the Advocate for Joy awards, which this year will be presented to two distinguished public servants whose work has dramatically reshaped the landscape for Texas children and families: Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis and Dr. Lauren Gambill, a prominent pediatric hospitalist and public policy expert.

Commissioner Ellis, representing Harris County Precinct One, has long been a towering figure in Texas politics, known for championing purpose-driven public service aimed at elevating the quality of life for Houston-area families. Over his extensive career in local government, Ellis has consistently used his platform on the Harris County Commissioners Court to enact systemic, progressive reforms. Notably, he played a critical, frontline role in securing vital nonviolent misdemeanor bail reform within the county, a move praised by criminal justice and child advocates alike for keeping families intact and reducing the destabilizing impacts of the cash bail system on vulnerable households. In addition to his structural reforms of the justice system, Ellis has spearheaded transformative local investments focused on environmental and climate resilience, recognizing that ecological stability is deeply intertwined with public health and child welfare. Furthermore, demonstrating a hands-on commitment to educational equity, Ellis runs a popular summer literacy program every year designed specifically to help Harris County youth combat learning loss during the critical months they are out of the traditional classroom environment.

Sharing the Advocate for Joy honors with Commissioner Ellis is Dr. Lauren Gambill, an Austin-based physician and powerhouse in the realm of state-level child advocacy and public policy. As a pediatric hospitalist, Dr. Gambill brings firsthand medical experience from the hospital wards directly to the halls of the Texas Legislature, where she has provided expert testimony nearly 20 times. Her rigorous, evidence-based insights have helped shape critical legislative discussions and policy formulations surrounding youth mental health, pediatric healthcare funding, and the persistent crisis of childhood food insecurity across Texas. Beyond her legislative advocacy, Dr. Gambill holds several influential leadership positions at both the state and national levels, amplifying her impact on the medical and advocacy communities. She serves as the Co-Program Director for the Academic Pediatric Association Health Policy Scholars Program, lending her expertise to train the next generation of physician-advocates. Additionally, she holds the vital role of Co-Chair of the Executive Legislative Committee of the Texas Pediatric Society and acts as Co-Director of the Texas Educators in Advocacy & Community Health (TEACH TX) Collaborative, cementing her status as a cornerstone of pediatric policy development in the state.

In addition to recognizing established leaders in policy and medicine, CDF-TX has reserved one of its most inspiring honors for a rising star in the advocacy movement. The Samuel Halperin Youth Public Service Award will be presented to Bryce Jones, a 20-year-old Texas State University student whose personal experiences have fueled an extraordinary dedication to public service. Having navigated firsthand challenges in accessing essential supports and resources while growing up, Jones converted those obstacles into a powerful passion for ensuring that all families in Texas can reliably access basic needs, including nutritious food, comprehensive healthcare, and systemic support. His foundational belief that advocacy is, at its core, “active love” serves as a guiding philosophy that captures the courage, deep compassion, and unwavering commitment to social justice that the Samuel Halperin Award was established to honor.

The program for the evening is robust and reflective of the collaborative spirit of the organization. Attendees will hear opening and keynote remarks from CDF-TX State Director Dr. Brandy Taylor, who has been instrumental in guiding the organization’s strategic vision across the state. In addition to Dr. Taylor’s remarks, the event will feature direct commentary from youth artists representing various communities throughout Greater Austin, ensuring that the voices of young people remain front and center throughout the celebration.

Adding an interactive and philanthropic element to the evening, guests will also have the unique opportunity to participate in a live bidding process for a signature piece of artwork. This special creative work has been curated to capture the rich history, the diverse people, and the landmark milestones that have defined the journey of CDF-Texas since its inception, blending local history with community artistry.

Reflecting on the significance of the upcoming gala and the tireless efforts of those being honored, Dr. Taylor emphasized the vital role that community dedication plays in the broader mission of child advocacy. “Every day, many Texans work to support and advance the well-being of children and young people across our great state,” said Dr. Taylor. “We aim to celebrate their invaluable efforts, highlight the importance of their work, and renew our commitment to ensuring every young Texan thrives during this joyous event.”

As preparations finalize for the October 8 gathering at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, organizers anticipate a powerful evening of reflection, celebration, and renewed solidarity. By bringing together veteran policymakers, dedicated medical professionals, passionate youth advocates, and community members under one roof, CDF-Texas continues to build a collective front dedicated to protecting the rights, dignity, and futures of children across the Lone Star State.
