AUSTIN, TX — On Thursday evening, the Children’s Defense Fund-Texas (CDF-TX), the local branch of the prominent national child advocacy organization, will welcome community members, leaders, and advocates to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center for its signature annual gathering, “A Celebration of Joy.” The event is designed to honor extraordinary Texas changemakers while actively uplifting the community, fostering a collective spirit of hope, and reinforcing the ongoing resilience and action required to secure a brighter future for the state’s young people.
This year’s gathering carries the evocative theme “Through Their Eyes,” serving as an immersive evening dedicated to celebrating the world through the unique and unvarnished creative lens of Austin’s youth. The program will proudly showcase a diverse array of artwork created by young people, reflecting their deepest hopes, personal truths, and expansive imaginations. By centering these creative expressions, the event aims to highlight youth voices and visions while powerfully reminding the public what true joy, justice, and a deep sense of belonging look like when children are placed at the absolute center of community life.
Among the evening’s highlights will be the presentation of the prestigious CDF-TX Advocate for Joy award, which this year will be bestowed upon two distinguished public servants and leaders: Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis and Dr. Lauren Gambill, a pediatric hospitalist and PHM Fellowship Program Director.
Commissioner Ellis, who serves as the representative for Harris County Precinct One, has built a long-standing reputation for championing purpose-driven public service aimed at tangibly improving the quality of life for Houston-area families and their children. In his vital role on the Harris County Commissioners Court, Ellis has played a pivotal and strategic part in advancing critical reforms, including the securing of nonviolent misdemeanor bail reform. Beyond the courtroom and policy chambers, he has spearheaded transformative investments aimed at bolstering community climate resilience. Furthermore, demonstrating a deep personal and professional commitment to educational equity, Ellis operates a comprehensive summer literacy program every single year, specifically designed to help Harris County youth combat learning loss during the critical months they are out of the classroom.
The second recipient of the Advocate for Joy award, Dr. Lauren Gambill, is an Austin-based physician and a leading authority on state-level child advocacy and public policy. Dr. Gambill’s influence on health and welfare policy in Texas is extensive; she has provided expert testimony before the Texas Legislature nearly 20 times, directly informing and shaping evidence-based policies concerning critical issues such as youth mental health, adequate healthcare funding, and the persistent challenge of childhood food insecurity. Her leadership extends far beyond legislative hearing rooms, as she holds several prominent and demanding leadership positions at both the state and national levels. Dr. Gambill serves as the Co-Program Director for the Academic Pediatric Association Health Policy Scholars Program, the Co-Chair of the Executive Legislative Committee of the Texas Pediatric Society, and the Co-Director of the Texas Educators in Advocacy & Community Health (TEACH TX) Collaborative.
In addition to honoring established leaders, the event will also shine a well-deserved spotlight on the next generation of advocates by presenting the Samuel Halperin Youth Public Service Award. This year’s recipient is Bryce Jones, a dedicated 20-year-old student at Texas State University. Jones has successfully channeled personal challenges he once faced in accessing essential life supports into a profound, lifelong passion for ensuring that all families across Texas are guaranteed reliable access to nutritious food, quality healthcare, and other fundamental basic needs. His deeply held personal philosophy—that genuine advocacy is simply “active love”—mirrors the profound courage, boundless compassion, and unwavering commitment to social justice that the Samuel Halperin Award was specifically established to honor.
The evening’s formal program will feature inspiring remarks from CDF-TX State Director Dr. Brandy Taylor, alongside presentations from talented youth artists hailing from across the Greater Austin area. Attendees will also be given the unique opportunity to participate in a special live auction, bidding on a signature piece of artwork that encapsulates the rich history, the diverse people, and the landmark milestones that have defined the journey of CDF-Texas over the years.
Reflecting on the significance of the annual gathering, Dr. Taylor emphasized the vital importance of recognizing those who dedicate their lives to the welfare of children.
“Every day, many Texans work tirelessly to support and advance the well-being of children and young people across our great state,” said Dr. Taylor. “We aim to celebrate their invaluable efforts, highlight the importance of their work, and renew our commitment to ensuring every young Texan thrives during this joyous event.”
The gathering promises to bring together a broad coalition of educators, policymakers, healthcare professionals, artists, and community organizers, all united by a shared dedication to child advocacy. As the organization prepares to open the doors of the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, the overarching message remains clear: by listening to children, honoring dedicated public servants, and uplifting young leaders like Bryce Jones, Texas can continue to build communities defined by equity, compassion, and enduring opportunity.
