Children’s Defense Fund-Texas Honors State Changemakers and Austin Youth at Upcoming “A Celebration of Joy” Gala

AUSTIN, TX — The Children’s Defense Fund-Texas (CDF-TX), the prominent local branch of the national child advocacy organization, is preparing to host its highly anticipated annual gathering, “A Celebration of Joy.” Set to take place on Thursday, October 8, 2026, the evening is designed to honor extraordinary Texas changemakers while actively uplifting local communities. Organizers note that the event will reflect a deep spirit of hope, resilience, and collective action dedicated to securing a brighter future for the state’s young people.

The gala represents more than just a traditional awards ceremony. It serves as a vibrant platform for community engagement and youth expression. According to CDF-TX leadership, the event will center on themes of joy, justice, and belonging, reminding the public of what is possible when children and adolescents are placed at the very heart of community life.

This year’s gathering carries the evocative theme “Through Their Eyes.” The program will unfold at the scenic Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, located at 4801 La Crosse Avenue in Austin. Rather than focusing solely on adult leadership, the evening is specifically dedicated to celebrating the world as viewed through the creative and imaginative lens of Austin’s youth. Attendees will have the opportunity to view a curated showcase of artwork created by young people from across the Greater Austin area. These pieces reflect the artists’ personal hopes, truths, and boundless imaginations, amplifying youth voices and visions in a public setting.

The mission of CDF-Texas has long centered on ensuring that every child has a healthy start, a fair start, a safe start, a head start, and a moral start in life. By bringing together community members, policymakers, advocates, and young creators, “A Celebration of Joy” aims to reinforce these foundational principles. The event highlights how local action and systemic advocacy can intersect to protect and advance the well-being of the next generation of Texans.

Central to the evening’s festivities will be the presentation of prestigious awards to individuals who have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to child welfare and public service in Texas. Among the honorees are two prominent public figures who have significantly shaped policy and community support systems across the state: Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis and Dr. Lauren Gambill, a respected pediatric hospitalist and fellowship program director. Both leaders will be presented with CDF-TX’s esteemed “Advocate for Joy” award in recognition of their extensive contributions.

Commissioner Rodney Ellis, serving as the Commissioner for Harris County Precinct One, has built a career defined by purpose-driven public service. His work consistently targets the improvement of the overall quality of life for Houston-area families and their children. Within the Harris County Commissioners Court, Ellis has wielded considerable influence, playing a vital role in securing critical reforms such as nonviolent misdemeanor bail reform. Beyond the courtroom and legislative chambers, he has also spearheaded transformative investments aimed at bolstering climate resilience to protect vulnerable neighborhoods.

Furthermore, Commissioner Ellis maintains a hands-on approach to youth development and educational equity. Every summer, he runs a specialized summer literacy program designed specifically to combat the "summer slide"—the academic learning loss that children often experience during the months they are away from the traditional classroom environment. His multifaceted approach to governance demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of the social determinants of health and well-being for children.

Sharing the “Advocate for Joy” honor is Dr. Lauren Gambill, an Austin-based physician and prominent expert in state-level child advocacy and public policy. Dr. Gambill brings clinical expertise from her work as a pediatric hospitalist, grounding her advocacy in the daily realities faced by children and families in healthcare settings. Her voice has become a familiar and trusted presence at the Texas Capitol, where she has provided expert testimony to the Texas Legislature nearly 20 times. Through her legislative engagement, she has successfully influenced evidence-based policies addressing critical issues such as pediatric mental health, adequate healthcare funding, and the alleviation of food insecurity among children.

In addition to her direct legislative advocacy, Dr. Gambill holds several high-profile leadership positions at both the state and national levels. She serves as the Co-Program Director for the Academic Pediatric Association Health Policy Scholars Program, helping to train and mentor the next generation of medically minded advocates. Within the state, she acts as the Co-Chair of the Executive Legislative Committee of the Texas Pediatric Society and the Co-Director of the Texas Educators in Advocacy & Community Health (TEACH TX) Collaborative. Her extensive network of leadership roles allows her to bridge the gap between clinical medicine and public policy, ensuring that pediatric health remains a top priority for decision-makers.

In addition to the adult honorees, the event will also shine a spotlight on the next generation of leaders by presenting the Samuel Halperin Youth Public Service Award. This year, the honor will be awarded to Bryce Jones, a dedicated 20-year-old Texas State University student. Jones has channeled personal challenges he once faced in accessing essential life supports into a fierce, lifelong passion for equity. Today, he works tirelessly to ensure that all families across Texas have reliable access to food, healthcare, and other basic human needs.

For Jones, advocacy is not merely a political exercise or an academic pursuit; he frequently describes it as “active love.” This philosophy reflects the exact type of courage, deep compassion, and unwavering commitment to social justice that the Samuel Halperin Award was established to recognize and celebrate. His journey from personal adversity to effective community advocacy serves as an inspiration to his peers and seasoned advocates alike.

The evening’s formal program will feature remarks from several key figures, including Dr. Brandy Taylor, the State Director of CDF-Texas. Dr. Taylor has been instrumental in guiding the organization’s strategic vision and expanding its reach across the Lone Star State. Her address will touch upon the ongoing challenges and triumphs of child advocacy in Texas, emphasizing the collective responsibility shared by all citizens to protect the vulnerable. In addition to Dr. Taylor’s remarks, attendees will hear directly from youth artists representing various communities across Greater Austin, giving voice to the very individuals the organization strives to protect and uplift.

As part of the evening’s activities, guests will also have an opportunity to participate in a special art auction. A signature piece of artwork, thoughtfully commissioned to capture the rich history, the diverse people, and the landmark moments of CDF-Texas’s decades of advocacy, will be put up for bidding. Proceeds from the auction will directly support the ongoing programs and initiatives of the organization.

Reflecting on the significance of the upcoming gala, Dr. Brandy Taylor shared her thoughts on the tireless efforts of the state’s advocates. “Every day, many Texans work to support and advance the well-being of children and young people across our great state,” Dr. Taylor stated. She emphasized that the primary goal of the event is to honor these contributions, bring widespread awareness to the vital nature of their work, and collectively renew the community’s pledge to action. “We aim to celebrate their invaluable efforts, highlight the importance of their work, and renew our commitment to ensuring every young Texan thrives during this joyous event.”

“A Celebration of Joy – Through Their Eyes” is scheduled for Thursday, October 8, 2026, running from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. The event brings together community leaders, philanthropists, healthcare professionals, educators, and young advocates for an evening dedicated to hope and progress. Through the combination of youth art, inspiring personal stories, and the recognition of seasoned champions like Commissioner Ellis, Dr. Gambill, and Bryce Jones, CDF-Texas continues to foster a culture of resilience and shared responsibility for the future of the state’s youth.
