Children’s Defense Fund-Texas to Honor Statewide Changemakers at Upcoming “A Celebration of Joy” Gala

AUSTIN, TX — In an effort to shine a light on resilience, community-building, and the boundless potential of the Lone Star State’s youngest residents, the Children’s Defense Fund-Texas (CDF-TX) is preparing to host its highly anticipated annual gathering. Titled “A Celebration of Joy,” the upcoming event serves as both a tribute to dedicated child advocates and a vibrant platform for youth expression, bringing together policymakers, community organizers, families, and young artists from across the region to reaffirm a collective commitment to the well-being of Texas children.

Scheduled for Thursday evening, the gala stands as a cornerstone initiative for the local arm of the national child advocacy organization. By centering the voices, dreams, and creative visions of the next generation, CDF-TX aims to foster an atmosphere of hope and collective action. Organizers emphasize that the evening is designed to remind the broader public of what true justice, joy, and a genuine sense of belonging look like when children are placed at the very center of community life.

This year’s overarching theme, “Through Their Eyes,” promises to guide the entire programmatic experience. Set against the scenic backdrop of the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin, the event will transform the venue into an immersive gallery showcasing artwork created by local youth. These pieces reflect the intricate and imaginative lenses through which young people view their world, capturing their deepest truths, everyday realities, and boldest aspirations for the future. Through paintings, drawings, and other creative mediums, the young artists articulate narratives of community, resilience, and hope that challenge adults to view society through a fresh perspective.

Central to the evening’s program is the formal recognition of three exceptional Texans who have demonstrated unwavering dedication to advancing the health, safety, educational foundation, and overall quality of life for young people. This year’s honorees represent a diverse cross-section of public service, pediatric medicine, and grassroots youth advocacy, each bringing unique expertise and profound passion to their respective fields.

Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis and Dr. Lauren Gambill, a prominent pediatric hospitalist and fellowship program director, have been named as the dual recipients of CDF-TX’s prestigious Advocate for Joy award. Their recognition underscores the vital intersection between visionary public policy and hands-on community care.

Commissioner Ellis, representing Harris County Precinct One, has long been recognized as a champion of purpose-driven public service. Throughout his tenure in local government, he has consistently prioritized initiatives aimed at lifting up Houston-area families and safeguarding the welfare of their children. His impact on the Harris County Commissioners Court has been profound and far-reaching. Notably, Ellis played an instrumental role in securing nonviolent misdemeanor bail reform, a transformative policy shift designed to address systemic inequities in the local justice system while keeping families together.

Beyond judicial reform, Commissioner Ellis has spearheaded major investments in climate resilience, recognizing that environmental health is deeply intertwined with the well-being of future generations. His commitment to children extends into the educational sphere as well. Every summer, Ellis operates a dedicated summer literacy program designed to combat the "summer slide"—the learning loss that children often experience when school is out of session. By providing structured reading resources and academic support, the program helps ensure that Harris County youth return to the classroom each fall equipped for academic success.

Sharing the Advocate for Joy honor is Dr. Lauren Gambill, an Austin-based physician and nationally recognized expert in state-level child advocacy and public policy. As a pediatric hospitalist, Dr. Gambill witnesses firsthand the systemic challenges facing Texas families, experiences that have deeply informed her tireless advocacy outside the hospital walls. Demonstrating an extraordinary commitment to evidence-based governance, she has provided expert testimony to the Texas Legislature nearly 20 times. Her legislative efforts have helped shape critical policy discussions surrounding children’s mental health, adequate healthcare funding, and the persistent crisis of food insecurity across the state.

Dr. Gambill’s leadership footprint extends well beyond the legislative hearing rooms. She holds several prominent positions within state and national medical and educational organizations. She serves as the Co-Program Director for the Academic Pediatric Association Health Policy Scholars Program, helping to train the next generation of physician-advocates. Additionally, she lends her expertise as the Co-Chair of the Executive Legislative Committee of the Texas Pediatric Society and as the Co-Director of the Texas Educators in Advocacy & Community Health (TEACH TX) Collaborative. Through these varied roles, Dr. Gambill bridges the gap between clinical medicine and public policy, ensuring that the healthcare needs of children remain at the forefront of political discourse.

In addition to honoring established leaders in public service and medicine, CDF-TX will celebrate the rising generation of advocates by presenting the Samuel Halperin Youth Public Service Award to Bryce Jones. A 20-year-old student at Texas State University, Jones has channeled his own personal challenges with navigating systems of support into a powerful engine for change. Having experienced firsthand the hurdles young people face when attempting to access essential resources, Jones has dedicated himself to ensuring that all Texas families can secure adequate food, comprehensive healthcare, and other basic necessities.

Jones often describes advocacy not merely as a civic duty, but as “active love.” This philosophy deeply embodies the courage, compassion, and steadfast commitment to social justice that the Samuel Halperin Award was established to recognize. By elevating young leaders like Jones, CDF-TX underscores the principle that youth are not simply beneficiaries of advocacy, but active and essential partners in the fight for a more equitable society.

The gala will feature prominent remarks from CDF-TX State Director Dr. Brandy Taylor, who will address the gathered community, public officials, and supporters. Her address is expected to highlight the ongoing mission of the organization, celebrate the achievements of the honorees, and issue a renewed call to action for systemic improvements in child welfare across Texas. Furthermore, the evening will hear directly from several of the young artists whose works comprise the “Through Their Eyes” exhibition, giving attendees a chance to hear the stories and inspirations behind the displayed art.

Adding a unique philanthropic dimension to the evening, guests will have the opportunity to participate in a special bidding process. A signature piece of artwork capturing the history, the people, and the defining landmark moments of CDF-Texas’s decades-long journey will be put up for auction. Proceeds from the auction will directly support the ongoing advocacy, educational, and community-building programs that the organization runs throughout the state.

Reflecting on the significance of the event and the broader mission of the organization, Dr. Taylor shared her perspective on the collective effort required to support the state’s youth.

“Every day, many Texans work tirelessly to support and advance the well-being of children and young people across our great state,” said Dr. Taylor. “We aim to celebrate their invaluable efforts, highlight the importance of their work, and renew our commitment to ensuring every young Texan thrives during this joyous event.”

The celebration arrives at a critical juncture for Texas families, as advocates continue to navigate complex challenges related to healthcare access, educational equity, and social support systems. By bringing together diverse stakeholders—from veteran policymakers and pediatric specialists to passionate college students and budding artists—CDF-TX hopes to foster a resilient network capable of driving meaningful, long-term change.

The event details are finalized as follows: "A Celebration of Joy – Through Their Eyes" will take place on Thursday, October 8, 2026, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The gathering is hosted by the Children’s Defense Fund-Texas at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, located at 4801 La Crosse Ave in Austin, Texas.

As the date approaches, anticipation continues to build among community members and supporters of child advocacy. Through the combined recognition of seasoned leaders like Commissioner Ellis and Dr. Gambill, the inspiring youth leadership of Bryce Jones, and the creative expressions of Austin’s young artists, the evening promises to be a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when a community unites in shared dedication to its children.
