Children’s Defense Fund-Texas Spotlights State Changemakers and Youth Voices for Annual ‘Celebration of Joy’

AUSTIN, TX — In an evening dedicated to hope, resilience, and the creative vision of the state’s younger generation, the Children’s Defense Fund-Texas (CDF-TX) is preparing to host its signature annual event, “A Celebration of Joy.” Set to take place on Thursday, October 8, 2026, the gathering serves as both a recognition of prominent Texas changemakers and a vibrant platform for youth expression, uplifting communities through a collective commitment to the well-being of young people across the Lone Star State.

The local arm of the national child advocacy organization has chosen a powerful guiding theme for this year’s gala: “Through Their Eyes.” Scheduled to unfold at the scenic Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin, the event is designed to immerse attendees in a world viewed through the creative lens of Greater Austin’s youth. Rather than traditional panel discussions or standard fundraising galas, the evening will prominently showcase original artwork created by young people. These pieces reflect their deepest hopes, personal truths, and unbridled imaginations, acting as a direct window into how children perceive their communities. By placing youth voices front and center, organizers hope to vividly remind the public of what joy, justice, and a true sense of belonging look like when children are made the focal point of civic life.

As part of the evening’s core mission to honor those who move the needle for Texas youth, CDF-TX has announced the recipients of its prestigious Advocate for Joy award. This year, the honor will be bestowed upon Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis and Dr. Lauren Gambill, a respected pediatric hospitalist and PHM Fellowship Program Director. Both leaders have carved out distinct paths in public service and advocacy, dedicating their careers to structural improvements that safeguard and elevate the quality of life for children and families.

Commissioner Ellis, who represents Harris County Precinct One, has long been recognized for championing purpose-driven public service. His work on the Harris County Commissioners Court has left a lasting imprint on the Houston area, notably through pivotal policy decisions such as securing nonviolent misdemeanor bail reform and spearheading transformative investments in climate resilience to protect vulnerable populations. Beyond his structural governance work, Ellis maintains a hands-on commitment to education and child welfare. Every summer, he runs an intensive summer literacy program designed specifically to combat the "summer slide," helping Harris County youth avoid learning loss during the critical months they are out of the traditional classroom environment.

Sharing the Advocate for Joy honor is Dr. Lauren Gambill, an Austin-based physician and prominent authority in state-level child advocacy and public policy. Dr. Gambill’s influence extends deep into the halls of the Texas Legislature, where she has provided expert testimony nearly 20 times. Her rigorous, data-driven insights have helped shape evidence-based policies surrounding critical issues such as pediatric mental health, essential healthcare funding, and the persistent challenge of childhood food insecurity. In addition to her clinical and legislative work, Dr. Gambill occupies several influential leadership positions at both the state and national levels. She serves as Co-Program Director for the Academic Pediatric Association Health Policy Scholars Program, Co-Chair of the Executive Legislative Committee of the Texas Pediatric Society, and Co-Director of the Texas Educators in Advocacy & Community Health (TEACH TX) Collaborative, cementing her status as a vital pillar of the state’s medical and advocacy community.

In addition to honoring established leaders, the celebration places a vital emphasis on recognizing emerging voices who are already making a profound impact. The Samuel Halperin Youth Public Service Award will be presented to Bryce Jones, a 20-year-old Texas State University student. Jones has turned his own personal challenges navigating complex systems to access essential life supports into a fierce, unwavering passion for ensuring that all families in Texas can readily secure food, healthcare, and other fundamental basic needs. Holding a deeply rooted belief that advocacy is, at its core, “active love,” Jones exemplifies the exact brand of courage, compassion, and relentless commitment to justice that the Samuel Halperin Award was established to honor.

The program for the evening features a robust lineup of speakers and presentations. Attendees will hear remarks from CDF-TX State Director Dr. Brandy Taylor, alongside insights shared directly by the young artists whose work decorates the venue. A special highlight of the evening will be a live auction featuring a signature piece of artwork that encapsulates the rich history, diverse people, and landmark moments defining the decades-long journey of CDF-Texas.

Reflecting on the significance of the upcoming gathering, Dr. Taylor emphasized the relentless dedication required to foster an environment where every child can flourish.

“Every day, many Texans work to support and advance the well-being of children and young people across our great state,” said Dr. Taylor. “We aim to celebrate their invaluable efforts, highlight the importance of their work, and renew our commitment to ensuring every young Texan thrives during this joyous event.”

The event details have been officially confirmed by organizers. “A Celebration of Joy – Through Their Eyes” will take place on October 8, 2026, running from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, located at 4801 La Crosse Ave in Austin, Texas. As community members, advocates, policymakers, and youth gather beneath the evening sky at the Wildflower Center, the event promises to be a powerful testament to what can be achieved when a community unites in shared purpose, keeping the joy and well-being of the next generation at the very heart of its mission.
