Children’s Defense Fund-Texas to Honor Statewide Changemakers at Annual ‘A Celebration of Joy’ Gala in Austin

AUSTIN, TX — On Thursday, October 8, 2026, the Children’s Defense Fund-Texas (CDF-TX)—the local affiliate of the renowned national child advocacy organization—will open its doors for its signature annual gathering, “A Celebration of Joy.” Set against the picturesque backdrop of the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin, the evening is designed to honor extraordinary Texas changemakers while simultaneously uplifting local communities and reflecting an enduring spirit of hope, resilience, and collective action on behalf of the state’s youth.

The high-profile event, carrying the deeply evocative theme “Through Their Eyes,” promises to be much more than a traditional awards gala. Instead, organizers have curated an immersive experience dedicated to celebrating the world through the creative and unvarnished lens of Austin’s youth. Attendees will have the opportunity to view and appreciate a diverse collection of artwork crafted by young people from across the Greater Austin area. These creative pieces reflect the participants’ deepest hopes, everyday truths, and boundless imaginations. By showcasing these works, CDF-TX aims to amplify youth voices and visions, offering a powerful reminder to the broader public of what joy, justice, and true belonging look like when children and adolescents are placed squarely at the center of community life.

This year, the organization has selected three exceptional individuals to receive its highest honors for their unwavering dedication to advancing the well-being, safety, and future of young people in the Lone Star State. Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis and Dr. Lauren Gambill, a prominent pediatric hospitalist and fellowship program director, will both be presented with the prestigious CDF-TX Advocate for Joy award. Meanwhile, the Samuel Halperin Youth Public Service Award will be awarded to Bryce Jones, a passionate 20-year-old Texas State University student whose personal experiences have fueled a lifelong commitment to fighting for equitable access to basic needs.

As Commissioner of Harris County Precinct One, Rodney Ellis has long been recognized as a tireless champion of purpose-driven public service. His career in local government has been defined by a steadfast commitment to improving the daily quality of life for Houston-area families and their children. Within the high-stakes environment of the Harris County Commissioners Court, Commissioner Ellis has played a vital and influential role in shaping progressive policy. Notably, he has been instrumental in securing nonviolent misdemeanor bail reform, a landmark shift aimed at creating a fairer local justice system, while also spearheading transformative investments in long-term community climate resilience.

Beyond his legislative and administrative duties in county government, Commissioner Ellis maintains a deeply hands-on approach to youth development and educational equity. Every single summer, he spearheads and operates a comprehensive summer literacy program designed specifically to combat the "summer slide"—the well-documented phenomenon where children experience significant learning loss during the months they are outside the traditional classroom environment. By combining structural policy reform with direct educational support, Commissioner Ellis has cemented his reputation as a transformative leader for Harris County families.

Sharing the Advocate for Joy honor this year is Dr. Lauren Gambill, an Austin-based physician and nationally recognized expert in state-level child advocacy and public policy. Dr. Gambill brings a vital clinical perspective to the halls of power, having provided expert testimony to the Texas Legislature nearly 20 times over the course of her career. Through her meticulous and evidence-based testimony, she has successfully influenced critical policy decisions surrounding pediatric mental health, essential healthcare funding, and the persistent challenge of childhood food insecurity.

Dr. Gambill’s influence extends far beyond the state capital. She currently holds several prominent and demanding leadership positions at both the state and national levels. She serves as the Co-Program Director for the Academic Pediatric Association Health Policy Scholars Program, where she helps train the next generation of physician-advocates. Additionally, she lends her expertise as the Co-Chair of the Executive Legislative Committee of the Texas Pediatric Society and as the Co-Director of the Texas Educators in Advocacy & Community Health (TEACH TX) Collaborative. Her ability to bridge the gap between bedside pediatric medicine and macro-level public policy makes her an invaluable asset to the children and families of Texas.

In addition to recognizing established leaders in public service and medicine, CDF-TX is placing a special emphasis on emerging young voices by presenting the Samuel Halperin Youth Public Service Award to Bryce Jones. The 20-year-old Texas State University student has turned his own formidable personal challenges—specifically navigating the hurdles of accessing essential supports in his youth—into a profound and driving passion. Today, Jones is dedicated to ensuring that all families across Texas have reliable access to nutritious food, quality healthcare, and other fundamental basic needs. Operating under the deeply held belief that true advocacy is simply “active love,” Jones exemplifies the exact brand of courage, compassion, and relentless commitment to justice that the Samuel Halperin Award was established to honor.

The program for the evening will feature a lineup of inspiring speakers and presentations. Attendees will hear direct remarks from CDF-TX State Director Dr. Brandy Taylor, alongside powerful commentary and perspectives from the youth artists whose work anchors the event’s central theme. Furthermore, the gala will feature a special live auction, offering guests the unique opportunity to bid on a signature piece of artwork that encapsulates the rich history, the diverse people, and the landmark milestones that have defined the journey of CDF-Texas over the years.

Reflecting on the significance of the upcoming gathering and the tireless efforts of advocates across the region, Dr. Brandy Taylor emphasized the collective mission driving the organization forward. “Every day, many Texans work to support and advance the well-being of children and young people across our great state,” Dr. Taylor stated. “We aim to celebrate their invaluable efforts, highlight the importance of their work, and renew our commitment to ensuring every young Texan thrives during this joyous event.”

For those interested in participating in or supporting the mission of the organization, “A Celebration of Joy” will take place on Thursday, October 8, 2026, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, located at 4801 La Crosse Ave in Austin, Texas. Through events like this, Children’s Defense Fund-Texas continues to build a broad coalition of community members, policymakers, healthcare professionals, and youth leaders dedicated to creating a brighter, more equitable future for the next generation of Texans.
