Faith Communities Across America Prepare to Unite for the National Observance of Children’s Sabbaths®

WASHINGTON, D.C. — For decades, an influential annual multifaith observance has successfully united faith communities across the United States in shared worship, education, and social justice advocacy dedicated to centering youth voices and helping every child thrive. This weekend, the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF)—recognized as the only national, multi-issue advocacy organization working precisely at the intersection of child well-being and racial justice—will oversee The National Observance of Children’s Sabbaths®. This deeply rooted multifaith event is embraced and supported by hundreds of denominations and faith groups spanning the nation.

CDF designates the third weekend of October each year as a vital period for diverse religious and spiritual communities to unite in worship, learning, and advocacy by participating in the observance. The ongoing national initiative urgently encourages congregations of all backgrounds to center youth voices during their weekend services and associated activities. By doing so, these faith groups foster meaningful dialogue and direct action focused squarely on ensuring that every child in America is given the support and environment they need to thrive.

As part of this year’s mobilization, participants are strongly encouraged to organize a wide variety of engaging activities designed to elevate youth voices and highlight their most pressing concerns. These localized efforts range from dedicating traditional worship services and specialized prayers directly to the needs of young people, to hosting comprehensive educational programs focused on the systemic barriers that frequently hinder their flourishing. To ensure these initiatives succeed, CDF provides all participating congregations with a comprehensive guide to help them plan and execute their localized Children’s Sabbath events effectively.

On Sunday, October 18, 2026, CDF President and CEO Rev. Dr. Starsky Wilson will actively participate in the Children’s Sabbaths activities hosted by the historic Metropolitan AME Church in Washington, D.C. Journalists, community members, and the wider public are invited to watch his keynote sermon live, bringing the national message of advocacy directly to congregations in the nation’s capital and online viewers nationwide.

Reflecting on the significance of the weekend, Dr. Wilson emphasized that the annual observance represents far more than just a single service or isolated community event. Instead, he describes it as a dynamic, nationwide movement of multitudes who are intentionally working together to elevate the voices, meet the critical needs, and address the deepest concerns of children.

"We are renewed by works that center children, like The National Observance of Children’s Sabbaths," Dr. Wilson said during preparations for the weekend events. "This is a united moral witness for children that crosses all lines of geography, faith tradition, race, and ethnicity. The observance of Children’s Sabbaths honors a multifaith lens and is endorsed by more than 200 denominations, faith groups and communities, and religious organizations."

The breadth of this endorsement highlights the unique ability of the Children’s Defense Fund to bridge traditional divides within the American religious landscape. By bringing together Christians, people of diverse faith traditions, and various religious organizations under a shared banner, the observance creates a powerful collective voice for society’s most vulnerable members. This moral authority has been leveraged for decades to challenge policies and societal norms that fail to prioritize the health, safety, and future of the nation’s youth.

In addition to traditional worship and educational forums, this year’s observance takes on added civic importance. As part of the broader weekend initiative, CDF is actively encouraging congregations to discuss the fundamental importance of democracy with children and youth. This educational push is being conducted in partnership with CDF Action’s "Voting Rights are Children’s Rights" campaign. The campaign provides specialized resources designed to help faith leaders guide thoughtful, age-appropriate conversations that center young people and the unique issues they face as the country looks toward the upcoming midterm elections. By connecting spiritual health with civic engagement, the campaign encourages the next generation to understand their stake in the democratic process and the ways public policy directly impacts their daily lives and futures.

Media coordination for the national weekend of events is being managed by Kwentoria Williams, CDF Communications Director, reachable at [email protected] or 469-602-2357 for on-site inquiries in Washington, D.C. Additional media relations support is provided by John Henry, CDF Media Relations Manager, at [email protected] or 708-646-7679. As hundreds of congregations open their doors and stream their services this weekend, the Children’s Defense Fund anticipates a renewed national commitment to the welfare, rights, and voices of America’s children.
