National Observance of Children’s Sabbaths® Unites Faith Communities Across America to Center Youth Voices and Well-Being

WASHINGTON, D.C. — For decades, the annual multifaith observance has united faith communities in worship and advocacy to center youth voices and help every child thrive. This weekend, the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF)—serving as the only national, multi-issue advocacy organization working uniquely at the intersection of child well-being and racial justice—will oversee The National Observance of Children’s Sabbaths®. This powerful multifaith event has been embraced by hundreds of denominations and faith groups across America, creating a nationwide network of conscience dedicated to the protection, nurturing, and empowerment of the nation’s youngest population.

Designating this third weekend of October as a dedicated time for action, CDF invites diverse faith communities to unite in worship, education, and social justice advocacy by participating in the observance. The initiative urges congregations to center youth voices directly during their weekend services and associated activities. By doing so, organizers aim to foster deep dialogue and spark meaningful action focused on ensuring that every child in America is given the resources, support, and environment they need to thrive.

Participants across the country are encouraged to organize a wide variety of activities that elevate youth voices and concerns. These community-led efforts range from dedicating traditional worship services and specialized prayers to young people’s evolving needs, to hosting educational programs that directly address the systemic barriers hindering their flourishing. To support these local endeavors comprehensively, CDF provides all participating congregations with a detailed planning guide to help them structure their individual Children’s Sabbath events effectively.

As part of this year’s national mobilization, CDF President and CEO Rev. Dr. Starsky Wilson will participate directly in the Children’s Sabbaths activities hosted by the historic Metropolitan AME Church in Washington, D.C., on Sunday, October 18, 2026. Journalists, community members, and the broader public have been invited to watch his pivotal sermon live.

The schedule for the primary public event in the nation’s capital features Rev. Dr. Wilson at Metropolitan AME Church, located at 1518 M St NW, Washington, DC 20005, beginning at 10:00 a.m. For those unable to attend in person, the service will be broadcast live via Metropolitan AME’s official Facebook and YouTube pages.

Reflecting on the deeper significance of the weekend, Dr. Wilson noted that the annual observance represents far more than a single standalone service or weekend event. Instead, he described it as a vibrant movement of multitudes intentionally working together to center the voices, needs, and concerns of children in public life and religious practice.

"We are renewed by works that center children, like The National Observance of Children’s Sabbaths," Dr. Wilson said. "This is a united moral witness for children that crosses all lines of geography, faith tradition, race, and ethnicity. The observance of Children’s Sabbaths honors a multifaith lens and is endorsed by more than 200 denominations, faith groups and communities, and religious organizations."

In addition to traditional worship and educational forums, CDF is encouraging participating congregations this year to discuss the vital importance of democracy with children and youth. Through CDF Action’s "Voting Rights are Children’s Rights" campaign, faith leaders are being equipped with specialized resources designed to guide meaningful conversations. These resources help center young people and highlight the critical issues they face as communities prepare for upcoming elections and civic participation.

Organizations and individuals seeking further information regarding the weekend’s events, or media outlets wishing to connect with on-site representatives in Washington, D.C., can reach CDF Communications Director Kwentoria Williams or CDF Media Relations Manager John Henry through the organization’s primary contact channels.
