Designating the third weekend of October as a dedicated time for reflection and mobilization, the Children’s Defense Fund is leading the National Observance of Children’s Sabbaths®. This nationwide initiative invites faith traditions of all backgrounds to dedicate their weekend services, prayers, and community programs to the pressing needs of young people. By intentionally creating space for youth voices during these gatherings, participating congregations aim to foster deep dialogue and spark meaningful civic action focused on breaking down the systemic barriers that hinder the health, safety, and flourishing of America’s children.
The scope of the weekend’s activities is broad and adaptable, encouraging participants to organize events that directly elevate the concerns and perspectives of the younger generation. Congregations are utilizing the weekend to dedicate entire worship services to youth needs, offer special prayers for children and families, and host educational forums that examine the structural inequities affecting young people in society today. To assist faith leaders in these efforts, the Children’s Defense Fund provides a comprehensive planning guide, equipping communities with the resources they need to organize impactful Children’s Sabbaths events within their local contexts.
As part of this year’s nationwide mobilization, CDF President and CEO Rev. Dr. Starsky Wilson is scheduled to participate directly in the Children’s Sabbaths activities in the nation’s capital. On Sunday, October 18, 2026, Dr. Wilson will deliver a sermon during services hosted by the historic Metropolitan AME Church in Washington, D.C. The service, which begins at 10:00 a.m. at the church located at 1518 M St NW, is open to the public, and journalists as well as community members from across the country are invited to watch the proceedings via a live broadcast. Metropolitan AME Church will stream the event live on its official Facebook and YouTube pages, allowing a nationwide audience to join in the observance.
Reflecting on the significance of the weekend, Dr. Wilson emphasized that the annual observance transcends any single service or isolated event. Instead, he described it as a vibrant movement of multitudes who are intentionally working in tandem to place the voices, needs, and legitimate concerns of children at the very center of community life and moral consideration.
"We are renewed by works that center children, like The National Observance of Children’s Sabbaths," Dr. Wilson said. He noted that the initiative represents a united moral witness that successfully crosses all lines of geography, diverse faith traditions, race, and ethnicity. Furthermore, the observance honors a robust multifaith lens, earning the official endorsement of more than 200 religious denominations, faith groups, communities, and broader religious organizations nationwide.
In addition to traditional worship and educational programming, this year’s observance carries a vital civic dimension. As part of the broader weekend mobilization, the Children’s Defense Fund is actively encouraging congregations to engage young people and their families in discussions surrounding the fundamental importance of democracy and civic participation. Through CDF Action’s "Voting Rights are Children’s Rights" campaign, faith leaders are being provided with specialized resources designed to guide conversations centered on young people. These tools help frame the issues youth face as they prepare for the upcoming midterm elections, connecting matters of governance and civic duty directly to the well-being of the next generation.
