The global health community is in deep mourning following the passing of Dr David Nabarro, a towering figure in international public health, humanitarian crisis response, and sustainable development. Dr Nabarro passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, July 25, 2025, at the age of 75, leaving behind a profound legacy that reshaped how the world responds to epidemics, food insecurity, and systemic global challenges.
Throughout his extraordinary career, Dr Nabarro stood at the absolute forefront of numerous critical areas within the World Health Organization (WHO) and the broader United Nations system. Most recently, he served as the WHO Special Envoy on COVID-19, providing strategic counsel and steady leadership during one of the most testing periods in modern public health history. To colleagues, leaders, and frontline workers across every corner of the globe, he was widely respected, deeply impactful, and universally loved as a tireless champion of health, equity, and marginalized populations. Beyond his policy achievements, he was renowned for mentoring countless professionals, supporting their career development with a rare combination of vision, technical skill, profound compassion, and unwavering patience.
In an official statement, WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed his profound grief over the loss of his esteemed colleague. "I am deeply shocked and saddened by the passing of our dear friend, colleague and WHO Envoy David Nabarro," Dr Tedros said. "David was a great champion of global health and health equity, and a wise, generous mentor to countless individuals. His work touched and impacted so many lives across the world. On behalf of WHO, I’m extending our heartfelt condolences to David’s family, friends and colleagues. Rest in peace, my dear friend. We will dearly miss your expertise, wisdom and kindness."
Dr Nabarro’s career was defined by his remarkable versatility. He wore many hats, reflecting his immense expertise, boundless energy, and unyielding readiness to intervene across a diverse and interconnected range of sectors, including public health, nutrition, climate change, and food systems. His ability to navigate complex geopolitical landscapes and bring diverse stakeholders together made him an indispensable asset to the international community.
His formal leadership journey within the WHO spanned several formative years between 1999 and 2005. He initially joined the organization as Executive Director responsible for the Roll Back Malaria Project and the Office of the Director-General, where he spearheaded efforts to combat one of the world’s most persistent parasitic diseases. He was subsequently appointed as the Director-General’s Special Representative for Health Action in Crises, coordinating emergency health responses in some of the most volatile and dangerous environments on earth.
In 2005, Dr Nabarro transitioned to the wider United Nations system, embarking on a remarkable decade-and-a-half of high-level appointments that addressed some of the planet’s most daunting existential and humanitarian threats. From 2005 to 2014, he served as the UN System Senior Coordinator for Avian and Pandemic Influenza, guiding global preparedness strategies during a period of heightened biological anxiety. Simultaneously, from 2008 to 2014, he took on the role of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Food Security and Nutrition. In this capacity, he also served as Coordinator of the Movement for Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) from 2011 to 2014, holding the rank of Assistant Secretary-General.
When the terrifying West Africa Ebola outbreak shook the international community in 2014, the UN Secretary-General turned to Dr Nabarro, appointing him as Special Envoy for the Ebola Outbreak Response until 2015. His leadership during that crisis helped coordinate a multifaceted international intervention that ultimately contained the epidemic. Following this, from 2016 to 2017, he served as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Adviser for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Climate Change, operating at the rank of Under-Secretary-General to align global development goals with environmental imperatives.
Recognizing his deep institutional knowledge and crisis management expertise, the WHO Director-General appointed him in 2015 as the chair of the expert group tasked with reforming the WHO’s framework for managing disease outbreaks and health emergencies. His analytical insights and structural recommendations helped shape the modern architecture of global health security.
Dr Nabarro’s contributions did not go unrecognized by the broader international community. In October 2018, he was awarded the prestigious World Food Prize in recognition of his visionary leadership on global nutrition and his efforts to elevate food security as a cornerstone of human development.
In addition to his multilateral diplomacy and institutional leadership, Dr Nabarro maintained a strong foothold in academia and foundation work. From mid-2019 until 2025, he served as Co-Director and Chair of Global Health at the Institute of Global Health Innovation at Imperial College London. Furthermore, in 2018, he co-founded the Swiss-based 4SD Foundation (Skills Systems and Synergies for Sustainable Development) alongside Florence Lasbennes. Through the foundation, he dedicated himself to training, mentoring, and empowering the next generation of leaders for sustainable development, ensuring that his philosophy of systemic change would endure long into the future.
Between 2018 and 2025, Dr Nabarro curated the Food Systems Dialogues, a vital global initiative contributing to the profound transformation of agricultural and nutritional systems worldwide. His environmental advocacy was equally pronounced; he contributed significantly to preparations for the United Nations Climate Action Summit in September 2019 and co-facilitated the coalition that advanced the Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) workstream, an effort co-led by China and New Zealand. Furthermore, he co-chaired the forum on Climate Change and Health, which successfully concluded its comprehensive work at the World Innovation Summit for Health in November 2020.
In March 2020, as the SARS-CoV-2 virus brought the world to a standstill, Dr Nabarro was once again called upon to serve on the front lines, being appointed as the Special Envoy of the WHO Director-General on COVID-19. He held this critical role until his passing. Under his strategic leadership during this period, the 4SD Foundation led the pivotal Summit Dialogues that directly contributed to the landmark 2021 UN Food Systems Summit. From those dialogues emerged an active, enduring network of National Convenors for Food Systems transformation that continues to drive policy change at the national level today.
When the war in Ukraine broke out, triggering cascading global shortages, Dr Nabarro seamlessly stepped into yet another crisis role. He joined the UN Secretary-General’s Food, Energy, and Finance Crisis Response Group, taking on the responsibility of co-leading the Food Workstream to mitigate the impact of the conflict on vulnerable populations worldwide. In recognition of his decades-long, transformative contributions to global health and humanity, King Charles III knighted Dr Nabarro in 2023.
News of his passing was formally announced by the 4SD Foundation in a poignant statement titled "A Difficult Announcement," confirming that he passed away at his home on Friday, July 25.
"David’s generosity and unwavering commitment to improve the lives of others will be sorely missed," the foundation’s statement read. "He leaves behind his beloved wife, Flo, his children, Tom, Ollie, Polly, Josie, Lucas and seven grandchildren. The family is comforted by the support and compassion extended to them as they navigate this difficult time."
On July 30, Dr Nabarro’s family released a heartfelt statement expressing their gratitude for the overwhelming global response to his passing. "We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of tributes to David, and for the kindness to all who mourn his passing," the family said. "Across the fields of international development, especially public health, food systems transformation, nutrition and crisis response, we are proud to see how his legacy will continue through so many compassionate leaders working to shift systems from within."
In accordance with the family’s wishes, a small, private funeral will be held with close family members on Monday, August 4. In the weeks that follow, a series of memorial services will be organized to allow colleagues, friends, and admirers whose lives Dr Nabarro touched to gather and pay their final respects.
The family has also established an online memorial web page where individuals from around the world can leave personal messages, shared memories, and mementos honoring his extraordinary life and career.
